What is Automower® Frost Guard and How Does It Work?

New Zealand's weather can be unpredictable. From droughts to downpours, and from warm breezes to frosty mornings, these fluctuations can take a toll on your garden, particularly your lawn.

Your grass endures a lot. Scorching heat can leave it parched and brown, while too much rain can waterlog the soil, leading to root rot and rampant weeds. But there's one weather phenomenon that can be especially damaging to your lawn: frost.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, "Radiation is the most common mechanism for frost formation in Australia. Frost occurs when the ground and ambient air cools down by the loss of heat to the atmosphere. This most commonly occurs under clear skies and with little or no wind."

Different types of frost can occur, but they all pose a threat to your lawn. Frost freezes the moisture inside grass blades, causing them to swell and split. Repeated frost exposure can significantly damage your lawn, leaving it in poor condition, especially if you mow while it's frosty.

You might think this spells trouble for robotic mowers like Automower®. After all, the beauty of a robotic mower is its ability to maintain your lawn around the clock. However, the brilliant minds at Husqvarna have pre-empted this issue with a feature called Frost Guard.

How Does Frost Guard Work?

Frost Guard is a smart software feature in Automower® designed to protect your lawn from frost damage. When Frost Guard is activated, your Automower® won't start mowing if the temperature drops below 5 degrees Celsius (41°F).

If the temperature is 5°C/41°F or below when the mower is scheduled to start, Frost Guard will delay starting by one hour. The mower will continue to check the temperature every hour and will only start if or when the temperature rises above 5°C/41°F. The temperature is measured by a sensor inside the mower's chassis, so the registered value might differ slightly from the ambient temperature.

How to Enable or Disable Frost Guard

You can easily enable or disable Frost Guard through the Automower® Connect app or directly on the mower's display:

  • Using the Automower® Connect app:
Go to More > Settings > Operation > Frost Guard.

  • Using the mower display:
Navigate to Settings > Installation > Frost Guard.

This is just one of the many intelligent features that make Automower® stand out and why Husqvarna continues to lead the way in robotic mowing technology. Frost Guard ensures your lawn stays in top shape, even when the weather doesn't cooperate.

At MowBot, we’re proud to offer innovative solutions like the Automower® to keep your lawn looking its best, no matter the season.
